Very Special Kids held a very important roll in the lives of my late little sister Tamara, myself and our family. She never had it easy, even within the womb. Tamara was born with epilepsy, cerebral palsy and was allergic to a long list of things. What we could eat and took for granted could kill her. Miss or give a slight incorrect dosage of her medication used to control her condition, and we would have said “Goodbye and see you soon” earlier. Tamara was unable to talk and comunicate, walk, feed or sit up by herself. She spent her time on her back or in a wheelchair with padding and support to hold her head up.
Life was definitely difficult for everyone. Very Special Kids an organisation that supports individuals and their families with life threatening illnesses was a god send.

They supported us through the life span of Tammy in terms of respite care, support, sibling support for when I was younger, to meet other siblings living life like me (so we didn’t feel like we were alone, we thought we were cursed, alone and forgotten), councilling for when she passed and still to this day via “Remembrance Day” and other means of support.

Without Very Special Kids life with a high respite sister who spent several days in hospital every year, would not have been bearable.

It is impossible to repay Very Special Kids for everything they have done for us, therefore, I try my best to support them in every way possible.

We are a children’s charity that helps more than 900 families across Victoria who have a child with a life-threatening condition with ongoing support from diagnosis all the way through to recovery or bereavement. Sadly, many of the children we care for will not reach adulthood.
The free-of-charge family support services include counselling, advocacy, sibling support, bereavement support, networking and peer activities, trained family volunteers and specialist care at the Very Special Kids Hospice. Each family is supported in unique and varying ways according to their personal needs.
Our Very Special Kids Hospice is the only children’s hospice in Victoria where we offer families access to planned and emergency respite, as well as end-of-life care. The hospice provides 24-hour specialist nursing care in a warm and welcoming environment.
In addition to the children’s hospice and main offices in Malvern, Very Special Kids is committed to providing family support across Victoria through offices in Brunswick, Ballarat, Bendigo, Hastings, Pakenham, Shepparton, Torquay and Port Fairy.
It costs more than $8.5 million each year to operate Very Special Kids and we rely substantially on generous fundraising support from corporates and the community  to provide our services free-of-charge to families. We have a calendar of engaging fundraising events, as well as a number of programs for you to donate to our important children’s charity, such as workplace giving, leaving a bequest and our regular giving program.
Very Special Kids was established in 1985 and we now have more than 100 staff and 953 volunteers to support these children and families through the hardest time of their lives.
